Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Lyme Disease Prevention in Dogs: How to Protect Your Pet from Tick-Borne Illness

Lyme disease is one of the most common tick-borne illnesses affecting dogs in the United States. The disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and spreads through the bite of infected black-legged ticks, often called deer ticks. Dogs that spend time outdoors in wooded, grassy, or brushy areas have the highest risk of exposure.

The good news is that Lyme disease in dogs is largely preventable. Consistent tick prevention, routine tick checks, and guidance from your veterinarian can significantly reduce your dog’s risk.

What Is Lyme Disease in Dogs?

Lyme disease develops when bacteria enter a dog’s bloodstream through the bite of an infected tick. In most cases, the tick must remain attached for about 24 to 48 hours before the bacteria are transmitted. Removing ticks quickly can help prevent infection.

Many dogs exposed to Lyme disease bacteria never show symptoms, but some develop illness weeks or even months later. Signs of Lyme disease in dogs often include fever, lethargy, reduced appetite, and shifting lameness that moves from one leg to another. Some dogs develop swollen joints or lymph nodes.

In rare cases, Lyme disease can affect the kidneys and lead to a serious condition known as Lyme nephritis. This complication can cause vomiting, weight loss, fluid retention, and other severe symptoms.

Because signs may appear long after a tick bite, prevention plays an essential role in protecting your pet’s health.

Where Lyme Disease Is Most Common

Lyme disease risk varies by region, but it is most common in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and parts of the Pacific Coast. Ticks thrive in environments with tall grass, wooded areas, and wildlife such as deer and rodents.

Tick activity is highest during spring, summer, and early fall, although mild winters can allow ticks to remain active throughout the year.

How to Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs

The most effective way to prevent Lyme disease is to avoid tick bites whenever possible. Veterinary-approved flea and tick preventives play a major role in protection. These products kill ticks or cause them to detach before they have time to transmit bacteria.

Regular tick checks are also important, especially after outdoor walks, hikes, or playtime in grassy areas. Ticks often attach around the ears, between the toes, under the collar, or near the tail. Removing a tick promptly greatly lowers the chance of infection.

Reducing tick habitats around your home can also help. Keeping grass trimmed, clearing leaf litter, and limiting access to dense brush makes your yard less attractive to ticks and the wildlife that carry them.

In areas where Lyme disease is common, your veterinarian may also recommend the Lyme disease vaccine for dogs. The vaccine can provide an additional layer of protection when used alongside tick prevention.

Why Prevention Is So Important

Lyme disease can be difficult to detect early because symptoms may appear weeks or months after a tick bite. Some dogs show only subtle signs such as decreased activity or mild joint pain. By the time symptoms appear, infection may already be present.

Preventive care protects dogs from painful joint inflammation and reduces the risk of complications that can affect overall health. Routine veterinary exams also help identify tick exposure and ensure your dog remains protected.

When to Contact Your Veterinarian

If your dog develops signs such as limping, fever, fatigue, or reduced appetite after possible tick exposure, contact your veterinarian. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics are usually very effective.

Your veterinarian can also recommend the most appropriate tick prevention products and determine whether Lyme vaccination is recommended based on your dog’s lifestyle and geographic risk.

Protect Your Dog from Lyme Disease

Lyme disease prevention begins with awareness and consistent care. Using reliable tick prevention, checking your dog regularly for ticks, and maintaining a tick-safe environment can dramatically reduce the risk of infection.

If you have questions about Lyme disease prevention or want to develop a personalized tick protection plan, schedule a visit with your veterinary team. Preventive care today helps keep your dog healthy and active for years to come.
