Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

As dog lovers at (), we’re frequently asked a variety of questions about our furry friends’ behaviors. One query that regularly pops up is, “Why do some dogs sleep on their back?” If you’ve ever found your pup snoozing belly-up, you may have wondered about this too. So let’s dive into this fascinating topic together and uncover the mystery!

Understanding Your Dog’s Sleeping Positions

First, it’s crucial to realize that dogs, just like humans, have preferred sleeping positions. You’ve probably noticed your dog napping in a variety of positions – curled up in a ball, sprawled out on their side, or perhaps even the ‘Superman’ pose, with all four legs stretched out. Each of these positions can reveal something about your dog’s comfort level, temperament, and even their temperature.

The Reasons Behind Dogs Sleeping on Their Back

While sleeping on their back may look awkward and uncomfortable to us, for dogs, it’s perfectly normal and often a sign of complete comfort. Let’s explore why dogs choose this position.

Show of Trust and Comfort

One of the primary reasons dogs sleep on their backs is a display of trust. In this position, a dog exposes its vulnerable belly to the world. It’s their way of showing they feel safe and secure in their environment. If your dog often sleeps on their back at home, take it as a compliment! It signifies they are comfortable with you and feel safe in your home.

Cooling Down

Did you know dogs sweat through the pads of their feet? When a dog is feeling hot, they may sleep on their back to cool down. In this position, they expose the sweat glands on their paws to the air, helping them cool off more efficiently. You might notice this behavior more during the hot New Hampshire summers when your pup is looking for ways to beat the heat.

Signs of a Happy Dog

Generally, a dog sleeping on its back is a contented dog. Belly-up sleeping might indicate that your pet feels supremely happy in their surroundings and experiences low stress and anxiety. They are relaxed and in their element, so much so that they’re willing to sleep in a position that leaves them rather defenseless.

However, it’s essential to note that if your dog’s back-sleeping is accompanied by other unusual behaviors like loss of appetite, excessive licking, or lethargy, it could be a sign of discomfort or health issues. It’s always best to get any significant behavior changes checked by a professional.

Contact () today!

Here at (), we’re more than just a veterinary practice; we’re a community where pet owners in Rye can access reliable information and receive top-notch care for their pets. If you’ve noticed any changes in your dog’s behavior or if you’re seeking advice on your pet’s health and comfort, please contact us right away!

If you would like to make an appointment for your pet, give us a call or book an appointment online at ().
